Bestowed with the mandate to deepen regional integration by facilitating free mobility and migration within the ECOWAS region, the Department of Trade, Customs and Free Movement, with the support of the International Organization for Migration inaugurated MIDWA in December 2000 as a Regional Consultative Process that brings together the ECOWAS Member States to discuss common migration issues and concerns for which durable solutions may not be forthcoming at the national level. Just as interStates consultation mechanisms have paved the way for dialogue, cooperation and consensus building on diverse issues and ultimately a global approach on migration, the objective of MIDWA is to promote and ensure a continuous dialogue on free movement and migration so as to address the challenges that may potentially frustrate regional integration.
